Horses who need a hero
After arriving at Happy Dog Ranch, Lola was trained and ridden by our trainer, Gray Kyle-Graves. They enjoyed participating in clinics with world-renowned trainer Mark Rashid before Lola started developing an inflammatory eye condition called uveitis. Although uveitis occurs in all horse breeds, it’s more common in Appaloosa horses like Lola, and they’re more likely to develop blindness because of it.
Now in her late teens, Lola has lost her vision, but not her spunk. Thankfully, her vision change was progressive not sudden, and she seems quite comfortable in her surroundings. She does amazingly well navigating life in the herd – whether she’s out in the pasture, hanging out with her buddies or getting lots of love from our volunteers. Lola gets excited when we introduce new herd members and is very accepting of them. She needs extra care and requires costly supplements to maintain her eye health. Please consider sponsoring Lola.

RED
Red is a Mustang who was rescued off the range in Utah. He was loved by his previous owners for many years, until their ill health required a new home for Red. We often are privileged to witness amazing compassion and sacrifice on the part of horse owners facing tough choices, and this is a great example. Red’s owners delayed the sale of their horse property until we had the capacity to take both of their horses together, so they wouldn’t be split up. Red and Beans enjoyed many years together at Happy Dog Ranch.
Mustangs are known for their resilience and intelligence, and Red is a fantastic leader in our gelding herd, maybe because of his background as a wild Mustang. His time in the wild also means that he benefits from continued training to acclimate to new experiences at the ranch. Please consider becoming the hero that Red needs.
Zuri is a young newcomer to Happy Dog Ranch. She’s a social, curious girl, and she loves interaction with our staff and volunteers. Zuri has a congenital issue that affects her left front foot, and she came to us when her owner ran out of options for managing her condition.
She is progressing well with holistic care, bodywork and regular therapy with SureFoot stability pads, which we frequently use to help improve a horse’s balance, posture and movement.
Zuri will require lifelong therapy to manage her medical issue and live a comfortable life. We’re having a lot of fun watching her develop and will share her story as she progresses. This sweet youngster would benefit from a sponsor as she continues to receive treatment and grow up in the Happy Dog environment. Please consider supporting Zuri.
